FOURTEEN

The Next Morning

Sofia stood on the front step of her building, wrapping her arms around herself to stave off the cold. She’d just kissed Rory goodbye and now he was walking away from her, down the snowy pavement on his way to the corner. If the cold bothered him, he didn’t show it.

A moment later, he disappeared around the corner, heading toward the restaurant where they’d eaten the night before, and where he’d presumably parked his car.

Sofia’s phone pinged. She unwrapped her arms from around her body and checked the notification.

Rory: You were right when you said i was perfect.

She raised an eyebrow, then muttered, “Why, you arrogant son of a bitch.”Someone needed to put that boy in his place. She quickly texted back: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Rory: You do. And i agree. I am perfect for you.

Sofia: Is that so?

Rory: That’s so. And for the record, I think you’re perfect, too.

Sofia hadn’t expected such a serious response, or one so laced with sincerity. She’d thought he’d been teasing her for her sex-addled pillow talk, hoping his good-natured jab would diffuse the intensity of the night they’d shared.

But Rory clearly had no intention of diffusing anything.

A warmth spread through her chest, then flooded all the way down to her toes. She was never one to lack confidence, but she wasn’t so sure about being the perfect match for Rory MacBain.

Still, she didn’t mind him being a little delusional. Especially if that meant getting to see him again later today, like he’d assured her she would. Especially when it meant she didn’t have to maintain any persona other than herself.

Maybe she’d even tell him her real name.

Rory: Have fun at work.

Sofia gathered her research books, not knowing how much “fun” she was going to have. She planned to spend the day at Black Castle headquarters, trying to find more information about that horn they’d dug up at Urquhart Castle, the one the bushy-haired fae had stolen.

She thought there might be some mention of it buried in St. Patrick’s Confessio and Epistola—his written Confession and Letters to his followers. After all, St. Patrick had first established the Black Castle and set its mission to rid the Celtic lands of the fae. If the horn was important for that mission, he would have mentioned it.

She didn’t have high hopes for any obvious mentions, but it could be in code. And figuring out coded messages would certainly make her workday go faster. She texted: And more fun tonight?

Rory: You can count on it.
